Marek Safjan


Judge Marek Safjan was born on 28 August 1949 in Warsaw. He graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of Warsaw University in 1971 and received a judge's certificate in 1973. He earned his juris doctor degree in 1980 and a habillitated doctor's degree in 1990. His habilitation thesis won in the contest organised by "Pañstwo i Prawo" [The State and the Law] journal. Since 1998 he is a professor of legal sciences.

Between 1993 and 1996 he served as Director of the Institute of Civil Law of Warsaw University. From 1996 to 1997 he was a deputy rector of Warsaw University and is a professor in the Chair of Civil Law of that University.

He represented Poland in the Committee on Bioethics of the Council of Europe. He is a chairperson of the Scientific Council of the Administration of Justice Institute, and is engaged in the work of Committee on Ethics in the Science at the Polish Academy of Sciences [PAN]. He is also a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Science and Arts [PAU].

He is a member of: Association Internationale de Droit, Ethique et Science (since 1990), Académie Internationale de Droit Comparé (since 1995) and Association Henri Capitant des Amis de la Culture Juridique Française, in which he served as Secretary-General of the Polish Section from 1994 to 1998. He is also a member of the Helsinki Committee in Poland.

In 2007 he was awarded the Council of Europe's Pro Merito medal for his outstanding contribution to the strengthening of the protection of human rights and of democracy.

He is an author of around 150 scholarly publications, including 18 books on civil law, medical law and the EU law.

Marek Safjan was a Judge of the Constitutional Tribunal from 1997 to 2006 and President of the Constitutional Tribunal from 1998 to 2006. Since 7 October 2009 prof. Marek Safjan is Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Communities.
