Judge Henryk Groszyk was born on 2 October 1926 in Sępólno Krajeńskie. He graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of Mikołaj Kopernik University [UMK] in Toruń in 1950. Judge Groszyk earned his juris doctor degree in 1959, a habilitated doctor's degree in 1965, and was awarded the title of professor in 1977. He headed the Chair of Theory of State and Law at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University [UMCS] in Lublin from 1969 to 1970. In the years 1970-1971 and again in 1983-1997 he headed the Department of Theory of State and Law.  From 1977 to 1981 he was director of the Institute of History and Theory of State and Law at the UMCS, a deputy dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration in 1981-1982, and dean in 1982-1984.

In the years 1982 - 1985 he served as a judge of the Tribunal of State. In 1981-1982 he was a member of multi-party parliamentary team of experts working on the establishment of a Constitutional Tribunal, a Tribunal of State and the office of President for the Republic of Poland. From 1995 to 1997 he worked as an expert for the Constitutional Committee of the National Assembly. He was a member of the Legislative Council of the Prime Minister in 1984-1987 and 1994-1998 , and also a member of the Scientific Awards Committee of the Prime Minister from 1994 to 1998.

He was a member of the Committee on Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1981-1987, a member of its Committee on Political Sciences in 1972-1996, and a member of the Council of Scientific Societies of the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1990-1993. He was president of the Central Board of the Polish Society of Political Sciences from 1989 to 1992. He is also a honorary member of the Polish Society of Political Sciences, International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR), Polish Legislative Society and Lublin Scientific Society.

He is an author of above 100 scholarly publications, including several monographs in the field of theory of state and law.

Henryk Groszyk was a Judge of the Constitutional Tribunal from 1985 to 1993.
